Creating categories in WordPress is a straightforward process. Categories play a vital role in organizing and structuring your blog content, making it easier for visitors to navigate and find relevant articles on specific topics.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create categories:
- Login to your WordPress admin dashboard. This is typically accessed by adding “/wp-admin” to your website URL (e.g., yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and entering your login credentials.
- Once logged in, navigate to the “Posts” section in the left-hand menu and click on “Categories.” If you’re using the newer Gutenberg editor, you may find it under “Posts” > “Categories” or “Posts” > “All Categories.”
- On the Categories page, you’ll see a form where you can add new categories. Start by entering a name for your category in the “Name” field. For example, if your blog is about food, you might create categories like “Recipes”, “Drinks”, or “Starters”
- If you want to create a hierarchy of categories (subcategories), you can select a parent category from the “Parent” dropdown. This is optional and only applicable if you want to organize your categories in a hierarchical structure.
- You can customize the slug for your category by editing the “Slug” field. The slug is the URL-friendly version of the category name. By default, WordPress generates the slug based on the category name, but you can modify it if needed.
- If you want to provide a description for your category, you can enter it in the “Description” field. This description is optional and will appear on your category archive page or when displaying a category widget on your website.
- After filling in the necessary information, click the “Add New Category” button to create the category. It will now appear in the list of categories on the same page.
That’s it! You have successfully created a category in WordPress. Repeat these steps to create as many categories as you need to organize your blog posts effectively.
You can assign a category to a blog post while creating or editing it. And you should also know that you can create categories on the go i.e. while writing any post. On the post-edit screen, look for the “Categories” section on the right-hand side, and check the box next to the category you want to assign. You can select multiple categories for a single post if applicable and you can also create category by clicking ‘Add New Category’ button on categories metabox.
